Make up Tips for Your Headshot

Jun 21, 2010

By Carol Meredith, Celebrity Make up Artist and Certified Nutritionist

The best makeup tip for any type of situation where you want to represent your true self, from someone who has been responsible for the headshots of everyone who has been on-air at ABC-TV for 15 years and have done a zillion high-profile wedding photographs, is KEEP IT SIMPLE!  Head shots are about showing your inner spirit, your trustworthy smile and your eye contact so you don't want to do anything on your face to take away from that goal, just as Melissa has suggested not to wear anything that detracts.

Below are some very basic tips for how best to come to the photo session.  Remember, I will be there to take your makeup to the level you need for the photographer to do her best work, whether I need to add something or may need to take something down a bit.  Believe me, I originally trained with Bobbi Brown and I learned early on that Simple is Always Best!  Natural is often more difficult to achieve than overdone but.. .not to worry, I will know instantly what you need!

1.  Apply whatever type of light foundation you usually use. I will add concealer if you need it and I have some great powder that looks flawless on camera. Please don't use mineral makeup, it doesn't work well in photographs.

2.  Do your mascara, as that is a process that takes away from the time I could be spending enhancing your great features.

3.  This is not the time to use those beautiful shimmery eye-shadows that are so fashionable.  Matte, neutral colors (bone, taupe, gray) work best for head shots. If you usually wear eyeliner, please do not apply it under the eye, as it tends to close the eye in photos. We can always use a bit of eye-shadow shading if necessary.

4.  If you usually use bronzers, especially if they have shimmery qualities, do not use it prior to the photo shoot. If you need to be "warmed up" I can use a matte bronzer, although I usually don't recommend it except for men's headshots.

5.  Please be sure to bring whatever lipstick(s) you usually wear so I don't need to spend time asking what your faves are. Once we talk and I understand the color depth you are comfortable with, I can apply either your shade or something similar. I generally do not suggest using lip-gloss for a photo unless it is strategically placed.

I am fortunate in being able to have a wonderful assistant, Brittni Caccamise, that evening and I will be directing her on your lip and eyeliner application, should you need it, which will expedite the process considerably and allow me to spend more time on your over-all look.
