Janera
Soerel is the Founder and Publisher of JANERA.com, The Voice of
Global Nomads. Born and raised on Curaçao by Surinamese
parents, Soerel went to Georgetown University and finished her
undergraduate degree at the London School of Economics. She then
obtained a Masters in Economics from Erasmus University in Rotterdam.
Economics
degree in hand, Soerel worked for years in investment banking on
cross-border corporate finance deals in Italy and The Netherlands.
Realizing that finance was not her life’s work, Soerel enrolled
at Columbia University in New York, graduating with a dual MBA/MIA
degree in business and international affairs. She subsequently spent
time at a design and branding firm, where she learned about the power
of the Web, images, and design. In 2007 she launched JANERA.com.
Soerel
also hold regular events where pressing global issues get discussed
in attractive, non-academic, non-intimidating settings that fit the
lifestyle of Global Nomads. Her aim is to bring subjects like
Immigration, Globalization, the Credit Crunch, and American Foreign
Policy, to a larger audience.
Soerel
became a Global Nomad by choice—now fluent in five languages, a
former resident of more than half a dozen cities (including
Washington, London, Santiago, Amsterdam, Milan, and New York), she
has friends everywhere. Soerel is endlessly curious, and finds
herself increasingly drawn to global stories told from a human
perspective, and not the usual macro tales that relate to aggregate
numbers. She is also drawn to the many ways fellow nomads—who,
like her, operate in the space between groundedness and
restlessness—socialize in their adopted environments.
