What Your Website Needs

Knowing what you want and need for your site design before contacting a web design company can save you both time and money. The initial consultation with a web designer is not always free, so an easy way to avoid losing money is to know what you want and what you will need from a company before you make the call.

Your website goals

Before contacting a web design company, you should have a pretty good concept of what you want from your site. The type of site you have will be dependent upon its purpose. There are three types of websites that are commonly used:

  • An ecommerce website – These highly dynamic sites generally cost more than the previous two because they require programming to allow inventory control, consumer purchases, and product management. Though these sites can be template-based, they require a lot of customization, which is one of the reasons they can be costly.
  • A showcase website – These types of websites highlight your products or services in a visually stimulating way. They tend to contain a lot of graphics, and their goal is to display what your website has to offer. These sites may or may not be template-based, but they are usually customized to fit your business’ needs and style.
  • A basic information-sharing website – These sites are usually the least expensive and easiest to create. They are template-based and tend to have anywhere from three to six pages. Commonly referred to as a “cookie cutter site” this type of website will only distinguish your brand from everyone else’s because it contains your logo and company name.

Knowing what you want your website’s goals to be is a great way to determine the type of site you should have. For example, if your goal is to sell a product, then you cannot have a basic information-sharing site. Knowing the goals your site can also help web designers create exactly what you want.

The look of your website

Along with knowing the purpose of your website, you should also have a general idea of what you want it to look like. Contacting a graphic design companies without giving them something to work with can be frustrating, time-consuming, and even costly. It may be a good idea to search the Internet to find sites which have a similar look to what you want. Also think about color schemes and font. By providing your web designer with this helpful guidance, you can keep them on-track, and can prevent yourself from ending up with something that is way off-base when you are shown the first draft.
