Website Information Architecture - What and Why

September 18th, 2008 · No Comments

Information Architecture is the process of organizing the information on your website. Think of it as the way that you layout the pages in your site as they relate to each other. Sometimes people call this a sitemap. It’s important.
The sitemap of your website tells your users what your website is all about. At Ladies Who Launch we’ve been brewing up a new design for our site and whenever you are doing a redesign it is time to look at the way you have layed out your design.
The sitemap needs to bring all your important categories of information right to the user. Also the names of you links in this top level of navigation need to target terms your are trying to get better search engine Rankings.
I always find it best to create stickies or note cards with all your main pages and lay them out on a wall or surface as you draw the connections from the homepage. Each one representing a link. This way you can keep moving them until you are satisfied.

Do this again if you have a 3rd level of navigation for each page.
