QUESTION:
How can Twitter help my business and what steps should I take to leverage Twitter as a marketing tool?

ANSWER:
Twitter can expand the reach of your business by “tweeting” your way into circles of influence far beyond your immediate reach. It can be used to educate your audience, promote a special event, survey market interest in your product, inspire and support others and ultimately build relationships with people in other cities or even countries. Twitter can have the same (if not greater) power than the “brick and mortar” networking format – except, there are no limits to how many people can see your message. The opportunities are boundless.

The follow are five steps to beginning to leverage Twitter as a marketing tool in your business:
1) Create a profile page that matches your brand image, that promotes your websites and easily communicates your mission to anyone who reads it. Inspire people to want to be connected to you by being authentic in your communication.

2) Tweet professionally by providing messages worthy of reading (don’t fill your followers with news about when you walk the dog or eat lunch). As part of this, “retweet” or share educational and inspirational messages from other in industries complementary to yours.

3) Avoid the “auto-DM (direct message)” to promote your message generically. The power of Twitter is to build relationships through real conversations: Get involved in answering questions and asking questions. Keep in mind that marketing your business involves finding ways to create value to the audience; keep in mind that each fellow “Twitterer” is a real person not a machine.

4) Follow wisely. Select people to follow who are in your demographic markets, so that you can see what is of interest to them and what stimulates conversations among them. Follow people in your industry and complementary industries so that you can become involved in expert conversations and stay abreast of trends in information. Follow thought leaders who have credibility and integrity.

5) Use Twitter as a tool to unite your marketing message by sharing link information from your website, blog, strategic partnerships, events, tele-seminars, online store, etc. in a manner that is consistent with your overall marketing game-plan.
