STRATA Member Tracey Deschaine – Dixie Picnic

Dixie Picnic restaurant celebrates the home made food owner Tracey Deschaine remembers from childhood picnics with quirky Southern relatives. Initially located in Ocean City NJ, Dixie Picnic moved to Malvern Pa in 2008 where it serves the residents and corporate community of Great Valley. One of our popular menu items is Bette’s Box Lunch, which includes a sandwich, side salad, deviled egg, and one of our wildly popular “Upcakes”. Available in a variety of flavors and made from scratch on the premises daily, we ice our upcakes upside down so you get a bite of icing with every bite of cake!

NBC 10 in Philadelphia highlighted Dixie Picnic on October 13, 2009 in its feature segment “Let’s Do Lunch” with Aditi Roy. This 2 minute feature visits local eateries specializing in lunch time cuisine. Dixie Picnic customers contacted Aditi and suggested she try Dixie Picnic’s homemade picnic and comfort food menu. “Let’s Do Lunch” is a hands on visit, with Aditi joining Tracey in the Dixie Picnic kitchen where Aditi had the opportunity to create her own Dixie Picnic box lunch.

First, Tracey and Aditi made their own Sally Lunn rolls, a traditional Southern dough which results in a slightly sweet, very tender bread. Every day Dixie Picnic uses fresh Sally Lunn rolls for a variety of sandwiches. Next, Aditi tried her hand at piping deviled egg filling into just a few of the hundreds of hard boiled eggs Dixie Picnic prepares fresh daily. Finally, Aditi discovered how icing an Upcake is not as easy as it might look! After a few attempts at icing her own Upcake, Aditi decided to leave the icing to the Upcake bakers. Eating lunch together was the highlight of the feature, which also shared much of the history of Dixie Picnic and its emphasis on the stories and recipes of the Dixie Picnic women.
