STRATA Member Kathryn Marion – Real Solutions Press LLC

For many years, college graduates have been entering the world unprepared for the challenges that lay ahead of them. Back in the mid ‘90s, I wrote a small (64-page) book to provide them advice in the areas of career, money, and ‘life.’ After a break to become mom to four beautiful Chinese daughters, I returned to the project. The result is 304 pages of fast-reading, bulleted action-items covering the entire career life cycle, money issues from budgeting to taxes and insurance, and life skills such as cooking, time management, goal setting, choosing and working with a doctor, and much more.

Through my research for the book, many exciting doors opened and I made valuable contacts with experts in a wide variety of fields, including a New York Times bestselling author who ended up writing the Foreword for the book. The research and contacts also allowed me to create a companion resource website and include podcast interviews of experts to supplement the book’s materials and help struggling new young professionals even more.

The cherry on top came last month (October 2009) when I was informed that GRADS: TAKE CHARGE of Your First Year After College! took Finalist honors in two categories of the National Best Books 2009 Awards (College Guides and Young Adult Non-Fiction). It was very gratifying to have those hundreds of hours of research, writing, and designing recognized by a panel of industry experts.
