Ask Victoria: I have no business experience. Should I get an MBA or just launch and learn?

January 12th, 2009 · 1 Comment

Q: “I’m considering starting a business but I have a B.S. in Journalism and no business experience, although I’ve been writing for magazines for years and have landed some pretty big freelance jobs. Should I get an MBA? I’m thinking it will increase my confidence. Have you found yours useful?”

A: Getting an MBA never hurts. You’ll build great connections and be completely immersed in the world of business which, for someone with no experience, would be eye-opening. But many, many successful women don’t have MBAs. Yes, I have one, but the biggest value I received from it was not a hard set of skills but rather a business-oriented mindset. My sense is that your knowledge and intuition run pretty deep already. I suggest you tap into your inner businesswoman with conviction and just move forward. If you’re concerned about building confidence, networking will help you gain it. Other people will recognize talents and strengths you might never have realized you had.
