Want to Be on TV?

“Producers look for individual, distinctive personalities. Take a look at what happens on ‘The View’ between Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Whoopi Goldberg and Barbara sitting in the middle. Whoopi very much has a distinctive voice, as does Elisabeth. It’s about being good at something, having a unique opinion, and being able to tell it in an articulate and amusing way that people can relate to.”

Getting Your Product on the Big Screen

“If you hear somebody is doing a movie—for example they are doing a movie about bridesmaids and you’re that kind of designer—go to the studios, go to the producer … that’s the way you’ll get a star to wear your outfit. You can also go through talent agents and advertising agencies. Sometimes it’s a matter of going to producers who manage a lot of projects and asking them to write your product into the story.”

Mentoring

“I’ve had a lot of different mentors over the years. There is someone who has been a mentor to me since I was 21 who I still call sometimes to ask, ‘What do I do …?’ That’s invaluable. What’s been interesting is now he’ll turn around and ask me questions about what he should do.”

The Meaning of Festival

“We have certainly helped downtown New York come back to life while keeping the memory of the people that we lost on September 11 alive. It’s positive and joyous. A local merchant said to me, ‘We look forward to the festival like we look forward to Christmas.’ And that was terrific to hear.”

If You Can Make It Here

“I believe in what we’re doing in New York—trying to keep culture thriving with the widest and most diverse audience, and clearly there is no better place to do that than New York. But New York City is becoming unaffordable to most artists. You don’t want to lose the artists to other places. Making sure New York will always be the center for art and culture is important.”
