How To: Work With a Stylist (And How It Can Save Your Business)

September 2nd, 2008 · 13 Comments

3. Have they dressed individuals of all ages, body types, and industries? Can they provide you with current client referrals?

If you are very tall, super petite, or have a pesky “spare tire” around your waist, chances are you’ve been climbing an uphill battle in the stores for quite some time. Make sure that your stylist has experience with extreme body types and knows how to best camouflage your particular flaws and highlight your assets. A fantastic stylist is a “master illusionist” and should be able to teach you how to shop for the perfect styles to flatter your body type. Ask for a client referral list.

4. Does the stylist specialize in business professionals, and how do they charge for their services?

There are two types of stylists and two types of rates. Wardrobe stylists typically work on TV shows, movies, and editorial shoots. They may not have as much experience working with the general public as a personal stylist, who dresses people of all age groups, body types, and professional industries.

Stylists usually charge either an hourly fee or a flat package rate. Make sure you obtain a specific quote for the styling service so that there aren’t any surprises that may drain your budget.

5. Where is your stylist planning to shop for you?

Every client has different wardrobe needs and clothing budgets. How dressy or casual your lifestyle is should dictate where your stylist will be shopping for your new wardrobe. If you work from home, shopping on Rodeo Drive is probably not the way to go. Working within your individual clothing budget should also determine which stores and vendors are most appropriate for you. Make sure that your stylist has the ability to utilize a wide range of retailers and designers that make sense for your specific needs.

Embracing Change!

In order to change your appearance and get a more dynamic look, you should keep an open mind during the process. You’ll need to step outside of your comfort zone just a little bit to achieve the best results. It is impossible for a stylist to do a great job if you’re inflexible with your tastes. It’s your continual gravitation to the same old styles that got you in this mess, so be willing to let your stylist introduce you to better alternatives.

Testing your boundaries can actually be a lot of fun! Embrace change with open arms and you will be well on your way to getting measurable results.
