Finding a VoIP Vendor

February 10th, 2009 · No Comments

Now that you know a little more about the VoIP business and have decided that installing a VoIP phone system is the right choice for your business, the next step is to choose a vendor to provide you with the services you need. Before contacting potential VoIP service vendors, you should have an idea of the phone features you will want. By knowing your business phone needs, you will be able to effectively choose a vendor that best suits you.

Below are some questions to ask potential vendors that may help you decide which one to use:

  • What standard features are included in the service? You will want to ask about features such as voicemail, caller ID, call forwarding, system administration management, etc. Some service providers may offer standard features than others offer as additional features, so shopping around can prevent paying for a feature that you could have for free.
  • Do they offer training? It is likely that your employees will require some type of training on how to use the new phone system, which can probably best be done by the company providing you with the phone service.
  • How do they conduct system maintenance? Can the service provider work on your phone system remotely, or will they need to come to your office to fix any problems you may have?
  • What about security? If phone security is important to your business, your VoIP service provider should be able to provide you with security options for your system.
  • Will you be required to purchase additional hardware? Will you need to use their products, or can you purchase any VoIP phone?
  • What is involved in the installation process? Vendors should test your network to see if it has the capabilities to handle the added traffic incoming and outgoing calls will have on your network. If your network isn’t tested, and VoIP is added, you may end up paying additional costs to upgrade your system.
  • Do they provide references? If you can talk to businesses that have previously used a particular service provider, you may be able to get a better idea of the type of service they provide.
