LaunchTip: According to our surveys, interviews and community interaction with women entrepreneurs, we’ve learned that the #1 reason women launch businesses is for more freedom, control and flexibility in their lives.

As a result, women make choices in the growth of their businesses that reflect these motivations. For example, they will often resist funding options or hiring helpers due to the mindset of a perceived loss of control. This translates to an overriding fear that too much success might mean too much sacrifice in other areas of our lives like juggling family and engaging in additional passions.

Here’s the hidden secret: Actually, the reverse is true. When we deliberately moderate the growth of our businesses and resolve to “keep it small and manageable”, what ends up happening is we take on too much work and run ourselves ragged doing tasks that could be delegated if only we had a team and more resources. We spend so much time doing “everything” that all the things we thought we had freedom over, like spending more time with our families or taking dream vacations, fall by the wayside as we struggle to keep up with the pace. The trick is to take reasonable risks and start the process of working with others to help you lighten the load. Like anything new, when you first embark on managing others, there is a lot of work up front, but the payoff in the long run is incomparable. Ask any successful entrepreneur and she will tell you that “you can’t do it alone” and that her life is infinitely better with the support of her team and dispersing responsibilities.
