Daily LaunchTip September 15, 2008

From Victoria Colligan, Founder, Ladies Who Launch:

“As innovators and entrepreneurs, we constantly grapple with the question: ‘How do I explain an entirely new concept, product, or service in a concise and understandable way?’ I have found that the key to cementing your revolutionary idea in someone’s head is to create a visual image. Here’s the cheat sheet: Start with the words ‘Imagine’ or ‘Think of’ and you increase the likelihood that your audience will actually understand. For example, if you sell wellness products specifically focused on sharpening the mind, you might say: ‘Imagine picking up a Rubik’s Cube and solving it in less than 10 minutes.’

Another equally effective approach is to use a specific question that engages your audience, like, ‘Do you know someone who …’ followed by your solution. For example, if someone were to ask me, ‘What is Ladies Who Launch?’ I might answer: ‘Do you know someone who has an amazing idea for a business that they’re passionate about but don’t know where to begin? Well, Ladies Who Launch is your resource concierge—we provide you with all the resources, opportunities, and connections you need to turn your passion into a real and viable business.’

The bottom line: No matter how complex, revolutionary, or innovative your idea, you still have to be able to communicate the problem you solve and how you are solving it in one or two sentences if you are going to be successful (this is also sometimes referred to as your ‘elevator pitch’). Using visual imagery and a call to action on the listener’s mind is much more captivating and engaging than a longwinded explanation that delays getting to the point. Your goal? Create an image that she can repeat to the next person, and the next person, and the next person, so that the viral chain begins and leads you to more momentum and bigger possibilities!”
