LaunchTip: After years of watching the Hannah Montana show, in which Miley doubles as herself and the secret Hannah Montana pop star identity, and after countless car rides of belting out Hannah songs, every word memorized and dance move perfected, this past weekend, I finally had the chance to take my girls to the Miley Cyrus concert! Unfortunately for them and for me, the Miley “in concert” had none of the traits of her Hannah Montana girlhood image and every bit of the elements of a new racey rock star brand that seemed to be the true coming out of Miley, the sex object, now a woman all of 17 years old. As my children continued to ask me, why she didn’t sing this song or that song (those of the old Hannah identity), I attempted to respond by saying “they are trying to position her as more of an adult now, not a girl.” “Who is “they””?, Chloe (age 7) asked and then the proverbial “why”?

It occurred to me that the only answer to her question that made any sense at all was one that focused on re-invention. Re-invention—something we all need to do to stay current, keep the attention of our current fans, and position ourselves for expansion into new audiences. Don’t get me wrong, I’m by no means endorsing Miley, the sex object, and I’m still greatly disappointed that my girls’ expectations were shattered (I think we’ll switch to Taylor Swift), but at least I had an explanation that made sense and a chance to learn and grow from the experience. Reinvention is something I can latch onto, something that stands on its own, outside of any offensive content or sexual identity. The bottom line: Reinvention is a powerful tool; it is up to us, how we choose to execute on it.
