From Victoria Colligan, Founder, Ladies Who Launch
We all know by now that physical clutter leads to mental crowdedness, that if not dealt with, can cause paralysis of our projects, dreams and goals. Hence many of us take time every now and then, to clean out our lives. We spring clean. We redecorate. We throw things out. But is a once-in-a-while cleaning engagement with yourself and your space really sufficient? My response? No. I would argue that to stay mentally translucent and in a space where forward momentum is possible, what I call “clutter cleaning” must become a ritualistic way of life, and not just a periodic drill. What I’ve noticed is that when “clutter cleaning” actually becomes a mindset, we learn to question everything from the papers or clothes we hold onto to the decisions and belief systems we stick by. We question why a certain picture hangs in a certain place or why a rug, no longer appealing, remains in our living room. The mindset of “clutter cleaning” forces us to perceive things as if for the first time, anew, every day. Developing this mindset is the only way to grow not only our businesses, but ourselves.
Launchercise:
Practice “clutter cleaning” every day. Pick a different space to tackle, whether a single cabinet or an entire room. Spend 5 minutes a day “clutter cleaning”. Increase time and commitment as necessary and customize to your specific needs. Document how you feel, note any physical changes and emotions. Share your results and opinions with the Ladies Who Launch network in a group discussion forum created for this purpose, or connect with us on Facebook or Twitter. This is something I have been working on, and am noticing the effect that cleaning out has had on my day to day work. I tend to be more decisive about things, and act on them immediately to avoid having them become another paper in the pile to be cleaned oput later. I think decisiveness is a character trait that successful entrepreneurs share, so it is a great perk of getting into the de-clutter mindset!

Most excellent! Want to add that I also believe that “clutter” includes any people, habits, situations, thoughts that drain our life-force (not just physical objects) and the quicker we take care of that energy drain, the faster we have more precious chi to use towards our beloved vision.

I find, for me, it is important to go one step further and start the de-cluttering process BEFORE it becomes a problem…by asking myself when purchasing something if I truly love/neet it before bringing it into my space. This is difficult to do in this consumer driven society where more is considered better, but I work it every day. It is a freeing process!
As part of my “clutter cleaning” mindset, I periodically make a list of 10 things that drain my energy and then figure out how I can delete or delegate them. This exercise ensures I work from my strengths.
Thanks,
Anastasia

I’m a regular at Goodwill so my house is ‘Spartan’ in content. Clutter in my office is another matter. I’m just beginning to begin clutter-cleaning on my computer & files. Some of it gets dumped some of it goes digital. Using folder-function on computer more. Using websites like http://www.PitchRate.com that have build in organizing for PR efforts. Cleaning out my chart of accounts on Quickbooks. Etc. I spend hours on my computer and in my office so it needs clutter-cleaning just as much!

I recently started working from home and I instantly started to notice things felt cluttered. I’ve started by putting a half hour to an hour on my calendar which is dedicated to clutter-cleaning. I can’t believe I hadn’t done it sooner.
