LaunchTip: Recently I came across a book that is a fresh take on an old concept: LOVE. In The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate, renowned relationship counselor author Dr. Gary Chapman, identifies five different love languages that serve to fill a person’s “love tank” either singly or in combination.
They are: Gifts, Words of Affirmation, Quality of Time, Acts of Service and Physical Touch.
Often we tend to give love in the languages we are most comfortable in, and alternatively, expect to receive them in these languages as well. When instead we receive love in an unfamiliar language, one that is not our native tongue, we assume that we are not receiving love on any level, resulting in feelings of emptiness and disappointment. For example, our spouse might prepare dinner for us every night (Acts of Service) but never share verbal compliments, which would be the “kiss of death” for a person whose primary love language is Words of Affirmation. Alternatively, someone whose primary language is “Gifts” may become hugely let down when her spouse fails to buy her flowers or give her cards on special occasions.
Dr. Chapman does a commendable job of explaining how the five languages work and even takes it one step further to show you how you might use your knowledge and awareness of them to repair any broken feelings in your own relationships (these
languages can be applied to children, siblings, parents, and friendships as well). For the constantly evolving launcher who is looking for fulfillment in business and in life, this book is a must-read, if only to validate what you already suspected about love and connection.
