This year Ladies Who Launch attended the Wall Street Journal’s D: All Things Digital conference, a “by invitation only event” that happens once a year in San Diego and brings together the best and the brightest thought leaders in the digital media space. After two days of informal yet provocative discussions, conversations, and new product demonstrations, I can say without hesitation that my favorite interview was between conference creator and producer Kara Swisher and Carol Bartz, the new CEO of Yahoo. When asked the profoundly simple, yet timely question, given Yahoo’s business challenges at the moment, “What is Yahoo?”, Carol’s response was clear and pointed, and at the same time left an opening for Yahoo to expand, while also distinguishing it from other media giants in the space.
She answered: “It’s the place where millions and millions of people come every day to check in with the people and things they are interested in. It’s where people find relevant and contextual information… and then the touch we have… we have this very global reach with a local feel…” No doubt we can all learn from Carol’s response, not just what she said, but the confidence with which she made her statement, lack of hesitation and strong conviction in her tone. But the bottom line is, be prepared at any given time, to know the answer to the very simple question: “What is your company?”
