Daily LaunchTip, January 9, 2009

In short, your to-do list should be just that – short. There’s nothing more daunting than a long list staring you in the face. Except a long list staring you in the face with only one or two things crossed off. Set yourself up for success by keeping a daily task list that’s realistic so you can enjoy finishing it instead of feeling defeated. It’s great to have big, detailed, long-term plans, but don’t look at all the pieces every day or you’ll feel overwhelmed. Keep these “someday” or “this month” lists handy, but not conspicuously posted on your computer or on your desk. Save that space for short lists. They’re doable, they make you more productive, and they keep you on track.

My favorite places to keep all of my lists and planning pages is my Mead Notebinder that I got from Target. It allows me to print my favorite lists (from http://www.ListPlanIt.com, of course :-) , hole punch them, and then add them easily to binder that can be used just as easily as a spiral notebook. I always have a Menu Planner and Grocery List that I keep, ready to plan when I get a spare moment. All of my Daily, Weekly, Monthly, and Yearly Planners are in there as well. Current personal, family, and business goals for now as well as the future. Lists make great tools.

I like to pick 3 – 5 things I absolutely will do in a day and then do whatever else I have time for. It’s amazing what gets done when I prioritize like that … and what gets itself done!

As a list-a-holic, I can attest to being overwhelmed with all the lists that I have created over time. It is satisfying to check things off my list, even if it is just one thing, I’m good with that at the end of the day.
