From Victoria Colligan, Founder and CEO, Ladies Who Launch
In business and in life, I’ve found that it pays to be able to flip flop between the details and the big picture. Throwing a great party makes a perfect example. On the big picture level, you have a vision: People dancing, great food, stimulating conversation, lots of co-mingling and smiles all around. It’s fun to think about and it’s definitely the first step towards a fabulous bash, but organizing and executing on the details is equally as important. While your big picture goal might be to plan the party of the year, you’ll have to consider details like mood-setting music, the menu, your home’s lighting, and flower arrangements. These things might sound easy or even mundane, but if they’re not done methodically and with mindful execution, your party will be a disappointment. This concept applies to business as well. You have to have a big picture vision that’s clear and strong. But it’s not sufficient to be just an “idea” person. Being able to create a big picture plan and then organize and sequence high level concepts will be key to your growth and will ultimately, if done well, result in huge success.

Great tip! This is the last Monday of January, 2009. The holidays are over, the economy is rough, make a plan.
Thanks Victoria; great way to begin the week.
What great advice!
As the old adage states, “The devil is in the details,” and one detail that too many people overlook is a careful review of the “invitation” to the party noted in Victoria’s Launch Tip analogy. An invitation to do business with you, or with me, can be in the form of text for the Web, or a press release, cover letter, bio, or marketing/promotional piece.
Prior to the release of your work on line, or to a news outlet or costly printer, have someone with good language skills and editing experience check your important “invitations” for spelling, grammar, and clarity of message. A careful review of your words can save you dollars and despair, and a polished finished page can attract customers to your business.
