LaunchTip: If you’ve been reading this week’s launch tips, then you’re already aware of the Harvard happiness and longevity study that we’ve been following. For this week’s first-time readers, the Grant Study is a 72 year Harvard study led by George Vaillant, examining the question of what makes us happy. After following 268 men through various phases of their lives, the study identifies factors that contribute to happiness and longevity. Although this all male study fails to take into account the possibility of gender differences with respect to happiness, we can still learn from the findings. The study identifies the following factors as essential: Mature coping mechanisms (described as using altruism, humor, anticipation, suppression and sublimation to handle stress), education, stable marriage, not smoking, not abusing alcohol, some exercise and healthy weight.
The study further supports that the half of the men who had five or six of these factors in their favor by age 50, ended up at 80 as what Vaillant defines as “happy-well” and only 7.5 percent as what Vaillant defines as “sad-sick.” Even more telling, of those who had been in adequate physical condition at 50, the men who had three or fewer protective factors were three times as likely to be dead at 80 as those with four or more factors.
Other interesting results showed a direct correlation between regular exercise in college and late-life mental health more so than a correlation between the same and late-life physical health. Additionally, pessimists seemed to suffer physically in comparison with optimists, possibly stemming from the fact that pessimists are less likely to connect with others or care for themselves. My conclusion? If you want to be happy and live longer, take steps towards boosting your optimism. Start by saying affirmations, expressing gratitude and maintaining a positive outlook even during difficult times.
LaunchOpportunity:
With more and more small businesses going out of business in these hard economic times, it is important to keep a tight track on all costs for your company, and save money wherever possible. One way to do this is having a time and attendance system that will accurately record the time of each employee. Because no one is perfect, having your employee’s track their time manually can lead to errors, and in turn can affect your company’s bottom line. Experts have estimated the average time spent on chasing and manually processing employee’s time sheets is 8 minutes per week. Get Your FREE Quotes NOW.
