LaunchTip: If you read yesterday’s launch tip, then you are already familiar with the Grant Study, a 72 year Harvard study led by George Vaillant, examining the question of what makes us happy. After following 268 men through various phases of their lives, the study identifies factors that contribute to happiness and longevity. Although this all male study fails to take into account the possibility of gender differences with respect to happiness, we can still learn from the findings.
Equally as telling as the contributing factors that we discussed yesterday, are the factors that have no impact on long-term happiness whatsoever. These may surprise you. Vaillant found that cholesterol levels at age 50 have nothing to do with health in old age. Additionally there are several factors, including anti-social tendencies, shyness and anxiousness that correlate directly with well being in young adulthood but seem to have little or no bearing on happiness at age 70 and beyond (shy, anxious kids are just as happy later in life). Vaillant’s conclusion is as follows: “If you follow lives long enough, the risk factors for healthy life adjustment change. There is an age to watch your cholesterol and an age to ignore it.” What I find particularly compelling about this perspective is this idea about adjustment. No matter what circumstances or set of genetics we are born into, Vaillant implies that we can make conscious adjustments to lead happier, longer lives. Why not start now?
LaunchOpportunity:
With more and more small businesses going out of business in these hard economic times, it is important to keep a tight track on all costs for your company, and save money wherever possible. One way to do this is having a time and attendance system that will accurately record the time of each employee. Because no one is perfect, having your employee’s track their time manually can lead to errors, and in turn can affect your company’s bottom line. Experts have estimated the average time spent on chasing and manually processing employee’s time sheets is 8 minutes per week. Get Your FREE Quotes NOW.
