LaunchTip: Recently I stumbled upon the Grant Study, a 72 year Harvard study led by George Vaillant, examining the question of what makes us happy. After following 268 men through various phases of their lives, the study identifies factors that contribute to happiness and longevity. Although this all male study fails to take into account the possibility of gender differences with respect to happiness, we can still learn from the findings. Vaillant identifies seven major factors that predict healthy aging both physically and psychologically, which include obvious things like education, stable marriage, not smoking, not abusing alcohol, exercise and healthy weight.
The seventh factor, however, may surprise you. It has to do with the defense mechanisms we employ when dealing with challenging circumstances and stressful situations. Vaillant concludes that employing “mature adaptations”, as opposed to immature, neurotic or psychotic adaptations, is a major contributing factor to living longer. According to Vaillant’s analysis, “mature adaptations” include the following: altruism, humor, anticipation (looking ahead and planning for future discomfort), suppression (a conscious decision to not act impulsively and wait for a “good time” to address the conflict in question), and sublimation (finding outlets for feelings like exercise or hobbies). So the next time you experience a difficult encounter, try not to repress your feelings, disassociate from them or over intellectualize their meaning. Instead, refer back to this list of “mature adaptations” and take control of extending your life.

With more and more small businesses going out of business in these hard economic times, it is important to keep a tight track on all costs for your company, and save money wherever possible. One way to do this is having a time and attendance system that will accurately record the time of each employee. Because no one is perfect, having your employee’s track their time manually can lead to errors, and in turn can affect your company’s bottom line. Experts have estimated the average time spent on chasing and manually processing employee’s time sheets is 8 minutes per week. Get Your FREE Quotes NOW.
