I actually began building my business without realizing it. Before I launched Amy Atlas Events I was a lawyer who, in her “spare time,” threw lavish, meticulously planned dinner parties culminating in super-yummy, deliciously decorated dessert bars. Desserts were (and still are!) my passion, so at the time it made complete sense to me to chronicle every dessert I ever had – the source, taste, color, price, each tasty tidbit – in careful detail. When I finally decided to become an event planner, I had a ready-made dessert data base! I couldn’t have asked for a more solid foundation on which to start a business because I built it myself. This just goes to show that when your heart talks, listen. Even if you have another completely unrelated job, when there’s something else you really love, find time to pursue it. Take classes, set up a home studio, read everything you can find. You never know when your expertise will come in handy – it may be sooner than you think!
