LaunchTip: Downward-Facing Dog is one of the most widely recognized yoga poses and is used often throughout the yoga practice to create space, closure and finality in between other poses. Some of the benefits of this pose include everything from relieving stress, mild depression, headaches and insomnia to energizing the body, improving digestion and preventing osteoporosis. The key to realizing these benefits is successfully releasing and opening the shoulders such that the stretch is felt significantly throughout the body.

In my own experience, I have found that this position, when done repeatedly throughout the practice, has a meditative effect on the mind, facilitating its ability to embrace thoughts that come into my head and then let them go, clearing the mind for enhanced creativity and problem solving. The launcher will always encounter problems, but it is the ability to expediently and effectively access solutions that separates the survivors from the ones who give up, and ultimately happy people from those who are discontented.
