Positioning is as important as the content of your request. After many years of launching, negotiating, failing and succeeding, I have learned one thing quite clearly: You can basically achieve anything as long as you position your desires carefully and take into account who you are talking to and what their goals are. There is a win / win in every situation and it is a matter of seeing the other side clearly and pinpointing the wins in every scenario. Once you come to terms with the fact that we are all really playing on the same team, it becomes much easier to get what you want by simply giving others what they want. The creative, fun part comes in when you have mastered your craft well enough to come up with solutions that others may never have thought of.
