From Susan Newman, PhD, author, The Book of NO: 250 Ways to Say It–and Mean It and Stop People-Pleasing Forever
Do you have the disease to please? A lot of women do. So to avoid distractions that keep you from moving your business ahead, resolve to say NO at least once a day–to a friend, coworker, spouse, child, or other family member who makes a request that eats up your time. Sound easy? It’s not; in the beginning you’ll feel guilty, but stay the course! You’re not doing yourself or the other person any favors by being a martyr. Sloppy, rushed work is worthless. Before agreeing to anything, ask yourself: Do I have the time? Will I be angry with myself or the person asking if I agree? What will I have to give up to do this? What’s in it for me? Why is my mouth saying “yes” when my brain is saying “no?” Why don’t I listen? Answers to these simple questions will reduce non-essential commitments, help you gain invaluable time, and keep you focused on business.
