It’s tempting, as we grow our businesses, to become less involved with certain activities and tasks over time. We rationalize all kinds of reasons why we should or could let go, including, to empower employees, maximize our time, leverage our strengths, spend more time with our families. But the truth is, there is a fine line between letting go and losing control. Relying on and taking advantage of the expertise and skill set of others is one of the fastest and best ways I know of to grow a business, but timing is crucial and delegating requires a whole skill set of its own. What I’ve found is that relinquishing control, when done bit by bit, in snack sized bites, results in the best chances for success and creates less overwhelm and more effective results on the part of employees.
