Over time, I’ve realized just how limiting language really is. Communicating with words requires a foundation in duality: We can only grasp black in contrast with white; expensive in contrast with cheap; abundance in contrast with lack. In fact if you really think about it, it’s almost impossible to make sense of the world in terms other than opposites: sunny versus rainy, salty versus sweet, nice versus mean. But there is one way to overcome language limitations that is helpful in business and in life. Once you accept that contrasts are all part of the same “whole”, the world feels safer and more controllable. Once you start treating duality as a game of sorts, it is easier to create a winning strategy and a plan to be on one side or the other without judgment. Societal, parental and environmental influences have converged throughout our lives to create limiting ways of seeing things by placing them in the duality buckets. When we merge the buckets, we begin to understand that good versus bad is a construct of the mind and in a sense, does not really exist. Knowing this, we can now choose our thoughts and choose to embrace the whole as the sum of its parts that we select and map ourselves to.
