Disentangling the complexities of your business, like unraveling a knotted necklace, can be a tedious process, but worth it in the end. All too often we focus on getting the big things right—the idea, the business plan, even investors, and we forget about the details that power our day to day activities and allow the engines of our businesses to run. By details, I mean things like, forming the appropriate entity, setting up the right kind of bank account, investing in business insurance, trademarks and copyrights. These details often come with a web of what I call “sub-details” or considerations, unique to each business, but that often frustrate the well-meaning and passionate entrepreneur. In a recent conversation with Ladies Who Launch CEO, Traci Long, she described “sub-details” as “those knots in your necklace that you struggle to untangle, that ultimately make the difference between being able to wear it (move forward) versus leaving it in the jewelry drawer (stagnation).”
If you’ve ever spent time getting the knots out of your necklace, you know that a great deal of patience is required and quite possibly, a great deal of time. Over the years I’ve learned that patience and time are the single biggest tools we all have the capacity for and can access without hesitation to ensure our success. When we invest our time and patience in a focused and positive way, we will eventually execute on the details correctly, freeing the knots and donning that bauble, analogous to achieving that dream.
