QUESTION:
How to Create a Workspace that is Conducive to Success

ANSWER:
The first step in creating a workspace that is conducive to success is to consider your requirements for the work you do, and identify what is essential to your workflow. If possible, streamline and simplify that workflow and those requirements. Eliminate clutter by having proper storage whether it’s cabinets, drawers, bins, shelves or a combination of all these. Do you really need everything you have out on top of your desk or can you de-clutter by putting some of it away somewhere? Make sure you have a place for everything and put everything in its place.

Use color to decorate and encourage positive energy for the work being done. If your business tends to be fast-paced and stressful, try light shades of blue or green because those are very calming colors that produce a calming energy. If you see clients in your office you may want to consider soft terra cottas or earth tones as these colors are conducive to building good relationships with clients. Surround yourself with colors and design that produce positive emotions for you.

Use art and wall décor to enhance the purpose of the office. Choose artwork that reinforces an ultimate goal or the motivation behind your business. If you’ve done one, a vision board is a great piece of personal motivational artwork that can be displayed somewhere discrete or where you can benefit from the visual reminder.

Remove unnecessary distractions. Are you trying to catch glimpses of who’s on Oprah today instead of making those calls you had on your schedule? Are you trying to carry on a professional phone call with children playing or crying in the background? To be successful, your workspace should be a place where you treat your business like a business and not a hobby.

Simply put, your workspace should be a functional place that supports you, your goals and your business objectives. These tips can help you make the most of the space you’ve got by creating a successful workplace where both you and your business can thrive.
