Arwa’s earliest memories have her crawling among multi-colored gemstones such as garnets, amethysts, and topaz of various shapes and sizes. Her parents, wholesalers of semi-precious gemstones, immersed their daughter in this vivid world.
In 2007, while living in Washington DC, Arwa decided to combine her love of jewelry design, and entrepreneurship by starting her own business. She participated in an incubator intensive that she credits as the catalyst for refining her business idea: Gemkitty Jewelry, a website where you become the designer and customize your own gemstone jewelry with a few mouse clicks.
“The vision really came together after seeing my female friends struggle to find jewelry that easily transitioned from day to night. I wanted to create a fun and easy way for them to design the perfect necklace,” says Arwa. “Also, when you’re involved in the creative process, the resulting product has much more meaning than one you just buy off the rack.”
Working as a pilates instructor by day and on her business by night, she officially launched Gemkitty.com’s online jewelry designer in the fall of 2009. Since launch, she’s been excited to see a steady growth in sales.
Running a start-up has been an exhilarating experience for Aria. “I’ve learned so much in the last two years; I’ve dabbled in everything from basic accounting to online marketing. I really love what I do, not only running the business, but crafting jewelry that I know is exactly what the customer envisioned.”

Cory Ceizler was born in NYC and grew up in Los Angeles. Andrea (The Weather Stylist Partner) and Cory met at Boston University and lived together in NYC after college. Both ladies needed to learn how to dress for the winter and the unpredictable east coast weather. Cory was always the girl getting caught without an umbrella when a nor’easter hit or wearing her down jacket on the only warm day in February. The Weather Stylist began as an idea over nightly dinners in their cramped apartment. After talking to their friends and some research, Cory and Andrea realized that many women have trouble getting dressed in the morning because they did not know what the weather felt like. They began saving money from their PR jobs and putting it toward developing a Web-site and iphone application that would upstage weathermen due to the fierce combination of forecasts and fashion.
The Weather Stylist and The Weather Stylist iphone application officially launched in January 2010. The Weather Stylist website is meant to be more of a one-stop-shop, offering information beyond weather and outfit ideas. At TheWeatherStylist.com, readers can not only get weather information and outfit ideas, but also news updates, travel information, and updates on the latest designer sales. The iPhone application is a quick and easy way to just get weather information and outfit ideas. They use the same weather information as weather.com and put together outfits that are flattering to most body types. Their priority is to pick out outfits that make a women feel comfortable, beautiful, fashionable and sexy.
Since launch, Cory and Andrea have used mostly PR, social networking and word of mouth method to grow the site. They have had up to 26,000 page views a week and have been approached by several companies to expand The Weather Stylist. The Weather Stylist is now a full time career and has been featured in The Chicago Sun Times, Simply The Best Magazine, The Charleston Concierge, The Las Vegas Review Journal, CheckYou Daily and more. We have also been on imnotobsessed.com, yahoo.com, collegecandy.com, techcrunch.com, justluxe.com, yourstylishlife.com and examiner.com. Cory’s goal is to team up with the news shows and have The Weatherman not only give the weather, but an outfit for that day!
At 23, Cory never imagined having a flourishing company, but she is so excited to see what is to come!
Not many people would think to add cayenne pepper to chocolate ice cream, but Jeni Britton Bauer, Featured Lady, co-founder and owner of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, wanted to give her party guests dessert with a kick. She got rave reviews and continued experimenting with new ingredients. Now a signature flavor, Queen City Cayenne was recently featured on The Food Network’s program “The Best Thing I’ve Ever Tasted.” Jeni, an advocate for small dairy farmers in Ohio, is committed to locating and using small grass-fed dairy farms for her ice cream, as well as bringing good dairy products to the community and helping local farmers achieve their dreams. Generating $5 million in revenue last year, Jeni’s company has appeared in Gourmet Magazine and Food and Wine, and on websites including The Daily Grommet, CMH Gourmand, Tasting Table – New York and Examiner.com.
While attending art school, Jeni worked for a French pastry company – an experience that inspired her to make ice cream. She opened her first venture, Scream, and spent three and a half years studying ice cream, flavors and business. Jeni ended up closing the store so she could hone her recipes and write a better business plan. Drawing on the practices of a traditional pastry kitchen, Jeni developed her own techniques to make American ice cream less sweet and more flavorful. In 2002, she and husband Charly Bauer launched Columbus-based Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams; Charly’s brother Tom joined as a partner one year later. Today, there are five store locations in North Market, Grandview, Short North, Bexley and Dublin.
“I wanted to bring really good ice cream to the community,” Jeni says. “I saw that there was a niche for artisan quality ice cream in Columbus.” In addition to Queen City Cayenne, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams offers unexpected flavors like Salty Caramel, Thai Chili, Bourbon Buttered Pecan and Wildberry Lavender. Together with her small team, Jeni makes every batch of ice cream that is served in her five stores and shipped nationwide.
Jeni, who describes her company as innovative, collaborative and delicious, learned about the value of high quality ingredients and using fresh, local ingredients during her time at the French patisserie. “It is an integral part of our business to use locally sourced ingredients whenever possible,” Jeni explains. “Or, to use the highest quality exotic sources such from as far away as Uganda, like vanilla beans, and South America.”
From the beginning, one of Jeni’s goals was to work with grass-fed farmers and help change the Ohio diary industry. “Small dairy farmers have real challenges to making their business profitable,” Jeni says. “Larger corporate-owned dairy farms have lobbied to make things extremely difficult for small dairy farmers who want to produce and sell high quality dairy products.”
The Bauers were hopeful they would be able to work with local dairies. However, the couple quickly realized they needed to become activists in the dairy world in order to meet their goals. Jeni and Charly are proud to say they succeeded. “Small dairies are disappearing across the state and across the country! The dairy industry is very unfair to the small dairy farmer, especially grass-fed,” Jeni says. “Legislation, swayed by powerful lobbyists, is heavily weighted in favor of the big dairies. It is very, very difficult for small dairies to exist.”
Eight years after its launch, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams is still family-owned and operated. Jeni, Charly and Tom all serve as partners and owners of the company. Jeni and Charly have two children, Greta and Dashiell. The toddlers love eating ice cream and right now that’s their only involvement in the company. The Bauers created an environment in their office where the kids can come to work with them on days when their schedules allow. Jeni says, “It is important to us that our business be amenable to having kids in the office – ours as well as children of our office staff. We want them to be inspired by what we do every day.”
What we learned from Jeni: “A very good friend told me ‘Here’s $15,000 but don’t take it because if you do, we’ll want something from you. Go back to the bank and work with them.’ So we doubled down and went back to the bank. I learned it’s best not to have partners. That’s been the best advice we ever received.”
The Right Stuff
“Before going out on a limb and starting your own business, do some soul-searching to make sure you really have what it takes to be an entrepreneur. You have to be in your business, whatever it may be, for the passion, not the money.”
The Back Up Plan
“Business is nothing but challenges every minute of every day. From determining what signs will stick best on the front of the freezers and employee relations, to following FDA regulations and fixing equipment, there is always the need to have a Plan B. In fact, have many Plan B’s!”
“‘Don’t be bossy and don’t take any guff.’ I recently read that in a journal belonging to my Grandpa Doc who passed away this winter. I think this advice is fitting and appropriate for women entrepreneurs.”

Over the years, I’ve learned some lessons about the importance of creating agendas. Whether you’ve scheduled a half hour call or a two hour meeting, agendas are vitally important for setting priorities, keeping everyone on track, and maximizing meeting participants’ time. Even an introductory “meet and greet” session can benefit from mapping out goals and priorities in advance. Here are some quick tips for developing effective agendas while still allowing for flexibility and brainstorming to take place:
• Designate someone (preferably on your team) to take the lead in starting the agenda; circulate a draft via Google shared docs (or the equivalent) so that all meeting participants have access to add their items. This establishes a “same page” mindset and allows everyone a preliminary understanding of each other’s goals.
• Prioritize most important items first: Have a method to your list.
• If an agenda feels too formal for an introductory meeting, hold a preparatory session with your internal team and determine what the goals are of the upcoming meeting: Ask yourself and your team: What do I / we want to accomplish from this meeting? What is the best case scenario? Worst case scenario? Middle of the road outcome?
• Prepare for next steps depending on which scenario unfolds and determine in advance how you want to react to each outcome.
• Allow yourself to be open and have fun!

PURLs Made Easy™ is the revolutionary direct-response marketing system that allows users to create Personalized URLs and Personalized Landing Pages for each one of their prospects and/or customers, featuring variable text, images, links, opt-in forms, surveys, and even video and sound. A typical PURL looks like: “www.yourdomain.com/JaneSample” or “www.JaneSample.yourdomain.com”
Users typically invite their contacts to their respective PURLs via a VDP (variable data print) direct mail postcard or an email blast using a third-party system.
PURLs Made Easy™ also allows users to create [Generic] URLs and Landing Pages, which allow visitors to access the same content as a personalized URL campaign, but instead from a static (“same to all”) domain name and landing page. Generic URLs/landing pages are the ideal direct-response marketing channel for all mass media marketing, including print and web ads, social media websites, blog posts, and broadcast media (TV and radio).
The idea to develop PURLs Made Easy™ was born and outlined in early 2008… Jackie Crino was the Director of Marketing for an international marketing consulting firm based in NYC, working at the forefront of the marketing technology industry; training senior executives and sales teams of multi-million dollar print and direct mail services companies on how to integrate cutting-edge online and offline direct marketing methods to boost marketing response rates and returns on investments; and playing an integral role in the strategy, design, implementation, and testing of direct-response marketing campaigns on behalf of dozens of medium-sized to Fortune 500 companies across a wide range of industries. During this amazing time in her career, there were two major emerging 21st Century marketing technologies, which were easily identifiable as the secret missing ingredients in developing the most effective marketing plans for business growth. These 21st Century marketing technologies are: Personalized URLs (PURLs) and Generic URLs (GURLs). Jacki became very intrigued with the power of these technologies in boosting marketing response rates and effectiveness; so by the end of 2008, she decided to leave Corporate America for good and embark on her entrepreneurial endeavor to put together a system that made these 21st Century marketing technologies (namely PURLs) – which before only existed at a price-point appropriate for medium and large-sized companies – accessible, affordable, and easy-to-implement for any solo professional or entrepreneur. Out of that need, PURLs Made Easy™ was born as the first company under Daydreamer Enterprises, LLC – our parent company.
Since their official launch in January 2010, PURLs Made Easy™ has been experiencing a healthy growth of new accounts made up of business owners and solo professionals from a vast array of industries – all while only having scratched the surface of their marketing plan. However, the biggest success this early in the game has been truly mastering the integration of the “best of the best” teams of people and marketing tools and technologies into everything that is PURLs Made Easy™ (a major challenge for most start-up technology companies). Today, their marketing system is nothing short of exceptional; everything is “on point,” and they are very proud of the fact that they can offer their customers – consisting of small business owners, entrepreneurs, and solo professionals – the industry’s best 21st Century PURL and GURL landing page marketing system, along with the best team of marketing strategists and programmers to provide top-notch support and innovation and maintain and surpass the standard of being a remarkable modern company now and into the future.

Joint Venture Your Way to Growth and Profits
As a solo-professional or small business owner, you have very limited resources to time, money, access, connections or knowledge. Join Francine Allaire this Thursday as she shares her expertise on joint ventures, allowing you to think bigger and achieve more!
Often we procrastinate starting a new project, embracing a new strategy, or launching a new business due to feeling overwhelmed by the grandeur of our vision and not knowing what to do first. The best advice I ever received regarding fulfilling my dreams was to take one small step every day in some direction without passing judgment on whether it is right or having attachment to a specific result. The tag line of Malcolm Gladwell’s book The Tipping Point is ‘How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference.’ Approaching a project as a series of small steps allows us to break down its enormity and narrow our focus.
The only hitch is this: If you want to catapult something to a higher level, the ‘step’ should feel just a little bit uncomfortable and maybe even counterintuitive. Send a tough e-mail, make an intimidating phone call, join a new group, or attend an event by yourself. Over and over again, I have experienced, as well as witnessed, this phenomenon in our Featured Lady success stories: The domino effect of taking small, uncomfortable steps is unparalleled and will lead you almost magically forward, producing real and tangible results.
Once you gain momentum, this process actually becomes fun and something you will look forward to each day because of the unexpected results you will no doubt experience. The bottom line is that you never know when your tipping point of success is going to occur. Success, big or small, never happens overnight (despite what we may be led to believe by others or the media). The only way to experience it is to take steps toward it every day. At some point, if you are persistent, tenacious, and passionate about your endeavors, you will experience the tipping point and your business will take on a life of its own.
