From Megan Reese, Ladies Who Launch Incubator Leader, Chester/Delaware County, PA:

"I’ve found that these days, sending e-mails is so common and quick, that if you actually take the time to hand-write a note to someone, it really makes an impact. I now subscribe to several local newspapers and spend one evening a week cutting out articles about women who have been recognized in the community. I write individual notes congratulating the women on their accomplishments and the press they’ve received, and include my business card and a copy of the article. People really appreciate this personal touch and it sets me apart from everyone else!"

Ladies Who Launch is asking you … what do you think of Megan’s tip? Let everyone know in the Comments section below!

Megan, your LaunchTip is a special one to me as I created a stationery business because I believe that hand- written notes touch lives. Whether business or personal, there is nothing more special then going through the mail and spotting a hand addressed envelope! It is an unusual occurrence. So I agree, stand out and write that note.

I definitely agree with Megan. I use a similar technique for networking. If I see an article that I think may interest a client or a colleague I met at an event – whether it be about their company, a sports team they follow, or a general article on their industry – I cut it out and drop it in the mail with a post-it note. It’s better than just forwarding an electronic copy of the article because everyone loves snail mail, especially at the office where the majority of mail is junk.

In fact, I just did it this morning! As I have learned, networking is not about the “hard sell” as much as it is about building relationships through common interests.

Megan, I love your action as I believe everyone has a need for personal recognition. My husband and I are co-owners of an Assisted Living and the Marketer sent a congratulatory note to those celebrating 50 or more years of marriage. She would include a ticket for 2 complimentary dinners in our dining room. The response was wonderful and we actually reached potential residents that may think of our facility if the need for Assisted Living ever arises. GREAT idea!!

Wow, that is a dynamic idea. Congrats to you for thinking outside the box from the heart.

Megan,
I love beautiful stationary, and a hand written note.
All of us who are so busy realize the special time
it takes to write a note put in envelope, stamp,
deliver to post man.Just taking the time to write makes the note special. Thank-You for going back in time, we could all learn a great lesson from our grandparents.

I could not agree with you more. Personal notes are so important in today’s business world. I know that the online card sending services are very time effective and they do have their place in your marketing efforts. However, building relationships come from personal attention. It’s worth the extra effort.

Megan,
What a great idea! I do this for friends but never thought about it for business associates or others within my business community whom I don’t know. Who doesn’t love receiving some recognition? And I can even send one of my own products. Thanks for getting me to step outside my box.

I’ve done this for years, and people appreciate it. But I use fine arts post cards. It’s fast, uses less postage and paper, (very green), and I keep a large supply of postcards and enjoy picking out a “piece of art” that I think fits the recipient. I use this to thank people for referrals, or to congratulate them.
